Chess Club Sept 19

We had 20 students turn out for the first day of chess club. There are 15 others interested who were not able to be there for our first meeting. That makes 35 if everyone shows up next week  There are only 24 stools, but table space enough for 48. I will order a few more chess sets on Friday. If you would like to order a set of your own, call Mr. Heinemann on Thursday at 651-451-8421. Nice sets like the ones we use - board, pieces with extra queens and vinyl bag for pieces - only $10 with my quantity discount!

PARENTS
We have some good players and will no doubt develop a few more this year. We have a chance to raise some money for the chess club in order to help finance a trip to Nashville, TN for the national championships on April 5-7. On March 23-24 the School Chess Association is holding the statewide chess championships at Minnehaha Academy High School North Campus. We have been asked if we'd like to sell concessions there. Since there are about 400-500 kids and their families, it usually nets several thousand dollars which would go a long way toward defraying any costs. But we'll need parents to purchase the food, sell it, and cook the hotdogs. We usually order lots of pizzas, then sell them for $2 a slice, hot dogs, chips, fruit, pop, candy, etc. Left over candy and pop is typically sold to the group running concessions at the next tournament. If interested in any capacity contact Bill Heinemann.

Chess Club Start

CHESS CLUB START

It's time for a new school year and time for chess club to start up again. We meet Wednesday's after school from 3:20 to 4:50 in Room 123. New or experienced players are welcome.

Last year was the first year of chess club at FHMS. We had about 20 who participated at some point in the year and about 10-12 regulars. We were able to field a team for the SCA Jr. High championships and finished in 4th, earning the trophy for the to p Middle School. We also participated with our 5th and 6th graders in the Elementary championships and finished in 9th place in the state, again earning a nice trophy.

PARENTS
We hope to improve on that this year and I've even got my eye on Nationals - April 5th-7th in Nashville, Tennessee. It's a great experience - 5,000 kids playing chess at once! I've taken several teams to Nashville before and the Gaylord is a fantastic place, If your child is one of our top players, set aside the time (and the money) now, We have a chance to raise about $1000 for the team by serving food at the SCA statewide championships in March. We need volunteers to prepare and serve food at that 2-day event at Minnehaha Academy North Campus in March.

STUDENTS
Are you smarter than an Olympian? Here's a position from a game between Kenya and Afghanistan in the women's division. The Kenyan lady had a chance for a winning move and missed it. Can you find it. Black to move.
