Test Scores and new ratings

Here are your test scores which should reflect your rating.
I was pleased to see that almost all of you could solve more problems than your rating would indicate. In the table below, Dec 14 score is after adding today's attendance and game results, but not the test. Then the test column shows how you did on the test. way to go Niko and Zeke! The test's impact on your rating is shown in the Chg colum. And finally your new rating is shown for Dec 15.

Upcoming tournament

Tournament on Jan 7 - 8:30 to about 3:00. Metcalf Middle School. Costs about $22 + lunch.
If we have 5 or more we'll enter a team in the team vs team. Others (or all if we have less than 5) will play in the individual tournament. It will be fun!
Be prepared to do you best, but you'll be up against the best that Minnesota has so be prepared to lose some games. If this is your first tournament, your goal is to try to win 1 game.

News

Tournament Saturday Be at Metcalf Middle School in Burnsville by 8:30 with about $27 for fees and lunch money. Plan to be there until about 3:00

Misinformed - My apologies. Sergey Karjakin did not win the tiebreaker - it ended in a stalemate. Also, they had to play a series of 4 rapid games back to back today. That was game 2 I was looking at. So games 1 and 2 were draws. Games 3 and 4 were won by Magnus Carlsen. So Magnus Carlsen is still the world chess champion. I don't think anyone expected the young Russian to put up such a fight; so congratulations to both players!

Final game: Carlsen is white - how does he win?

Gift ideas.

I have ordered several chess sets and scorebooks from US chess. I get deals for ordering often, ordering bulk and one shipping charge. So I can offer sets to my students for my cost.

Sets are like the ones we use at school and include pieces, extra queens, black and white vinyl board and a carrying case with zipper, handles, and sleeve for a rolled-up board.

Set  $11
Scorebook $2.

Lesson
We learned about pins today.
1) Look for two pieces in a line
2) Once you've pinned a piece don't be in a hurry to take it; it's not going anywhere. Make your opponent squirm under the pressure of the pin
3) Attack the pinned piece
4) Finally, as always, figure out what you opponent has to do to get out of the pin, and then DON"T LET HIM DO IT!

Tournament info, Ratings and Problem 8

Tournament on Saturday - Highview Middle School in New Brighton
694 to Silver Lake Rd south 1 blk to 7th then East 1/2 blk
Register on-line and show up at 9:15 or register at the door by 8:30. Will be done about 2:30.
For more details see schoolchess.org I'm planning on being there.
Here's problem #8 for those who want to work on it.
White's turn. Good luck. Hint: in situations like this, it is imperative to stay on the attack - keep the black king in check lest he start attacking you. If Black plays well, it will take 7 moves to clear all of Black's pieces off the board! Numerous hurdles and threats of hurdles limit Black's options.

The Chess Season is Underway

We had a pretty good turnout for the first day, and I know there are conflicts with fall sports.
Bring a pencil next week and we'll see if you can find the checkmates.

Why do I keep ratings?
1. You can monitor your progress over the year.
2. You know which players would the best match-ups in club
3. I use it as an indicator of when you're ready for tournament competition
4. If we participate in matches, I need to select the top 5 players and order them by strength.

Chess Club 2016 - 2017

Chess Club will meet on Wednesdays again this year 3:30 - 5:00 Room 123
If you had a rating last year, you'll start with that rating.

Did you know that more players from more countries attend the Chess Olympiad than the summer Olympics. The United States just won the Gold Medal at the Chess Olympiad.  Wesley So from Minnesota led the USA team with 7 wins 3 draws and no losses! Our women's team came in 6th.

Tournament Results

We're finding out we can't yet compete successfully against experienced players. Many of your opponents have been playing since they were little. Remember I said if your rating is above 400 you have a chance to win a game. So we came in as underdogs in almost all our games. Most of you were quite a bit younger than your opponents. We have a lot of work to do before next year.
