Dec 11 Ratings

We have an opportunity to join a league where we'd play five of our players against five from another school. It would be on Fridays in Jan and early February. It looks like the team would be Luke, Shanmuka, Elijah, Graham and Amanuel with Pragnan and Asher as backups in case someone couldn't make it. Or we could field two teams by adding Sam, Bisrat, Zach, and Dhanush. I would get the school to pay the fee, so it would be free for the participants. However, you would have to provide your own transportation to and from the school (which would probably be Friendly Hills, Heritage, or Metcalf. We don't need all 5 parents to drive - two will probably do for one team, 4 for 2 teams. Think about if you would like to participate even if I didn't include your name above. Ask your parents if you can go, and ask them if they would be willing to drive

If we don't join the league, I thought we might take the activity bus over to Heritage and play them.

Gift idea

Chess Sets
At this time of year, I usually put in a group order and order chess sets like the ones we use at chess club. I usually get a good discount by ordering bulk, frequent customer, split shipping, etc. Includes vinyl and cloth roll-up board, pieces with extra queens, large carrying case with handles, sleeve for board and zippered compartment for pieces. Cost is usually $12 to $14 which is better that the $20 if you ordered yourself or $40 at a store. Send me an e-mail at gemshein@hotmail.com if you'd like one.

We reviewed opening principles and discussed some bad moves to avoid.
We learned what checkmate is and 3 ways to stop it.
We learned what stalemate is. Although judging by the scores on the worksheet, most of you did not fully catch on. only 2 perfect papers, about 4 missed only one.

Tournament on Saturday at Metcalf Middle School in Burnsville. Cost $20 Be there at 8:15 to register. No elimination - you'll play 5 games. Done at about 2:30. My usual guideline is wait until your rating gets up to 400. But anyone can come as long as you don't mind losing all 5 games. It's a good way to improve. Check out the SCA website off the link in the upper right for more info.
