WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
I hope you learned some good stuff by going over game 8 in class.
1) Get out of the line of fire of a discovered check
2) Get out of pins
3) Castle early
4) Swing your knights over to the half of the board that the kings are on
5) Rooks belong on open files - challenge your opponent for the ownership of that file.
6) That last combination of Carlsen's trading of the six remaining pieces can be found by altering the order of moves in your mind - a lot of you saw Nf6+, but we had to make 2 other moves first to make that one work!
I can't say the score of the World Chess Championship between the champion Viswanathan Anand of India and the challenger Magnus Carlsen of Norway because some people (Magnus Nordy) is watching it game by game and doesn't want to know, but you can go to www.uschess.org and find out. You can even step through each game and it will move the pieces on the board.. I'd encourage you to do that. 700,000 people in Norway tuned in to watch the match live on TV (and there are only 5 million people in Norway.)
This is a chance to see history in the making. The world chess champioinship has changed hands only 3 times since 1975!
1972-1975 Bobby Fischer
1975-1985 Anatoly Karpov
1985-2000 Garry Kasparov
2000-2007 Vladimir Kramnik
2007-2013 Viswanathan Anand

Quote of the day.
"The man doesn't own a chess set, but his records are meticulous."
"Can you trust a man who doesn't own a chess set?"
"Absolutely not!"

Upcoming Tournament
You should consider attending the next tournaments which are at Metcalf Jr. High in Burnsville on Nov., 16.or the one after that on Dec. 16.
Nov 2. There are separate sections for boys and girls at this tournament. Sections for grades 4-6 and 7-9.so 6th graders (because you'd be the oldest in the section) and girls should like this one. Register and pay on your own.
Dec 7. I'll see if the school will pay for this one. Teams of 3 in each grade. Let's try to get the following teams:
8th grade: Tom Miranda, Magnus Nordby, Lendale Smith
7th grade: Frank Sullivan, Anton Priborkin, Thomas McDermott, Josh Phillips
Or, all the 7th graders could play up one grade and we'd have a big and powerful team. (I think I like this option.)
Others may come also - I usually recommend a rating of 400, but I think our club is so strong that those in the 250-400 range can actually play well enough to have a chance to win a game. This tournament will be difficult, but that's how you get better.
