Tournament Sat, Dec 7

Who?
Any with a rating over 250.
What?
Chess Tournament - Grade Level - sign up for the grade you are in. I may have you play up a grade so that we are a team, but we'll change that at 8:30 once I know who's there.
Where?
 Metcalf Jr. High in Burnsville
When:
Dec 7, Saturday Register on-line or before 8:30 on site. 1st round at 9:30 Done by 4:00 or sooner
How Much?
The school will pay entry fees. But bring about $5 for lunch or pack a lunch.

Registration: You can register on-line, and even pay on-line, via schoolchess.org You can also register on site if you arrive before 8:30. If you are late, you may not be paired in round 1. Let me know if you are coming so I can form a team or teams.

Awards: First place team gets a trophy, 2nd and 3rd place teams get certificates. 1st through 5th place individually receive trophies. There is also a novice trophy for the bet performance by someone who has never won a trophy before. If anyone is tied in points for 5th place but does not get a trophy, they earn a golden knight award (mini-trophy for honorable mention)

Upcoming Tournament

You should consider attending the next tournaments which are at Metcalf Jr. High in Burnsville on Nov., 16.or the one after that on Dec. 16.

Nov 2. There are separate sections for boys and girls at this tournament. Sections for grades 4-6 and 7-9.so 6th graders (because you'd be the oldest in the section) and girls should like this one. Register and pay on your own.

Dec 7. I'll see if the school will pay for this one. Teams of 3 in each grade. Let's try to get the following teams:
8th grade: Tom Miranda, Magnus Nordby, Lendale Smith
7th grade: Frank Sullivan, Anton Priborkin, Thomas McDermott, Josh Phillips
Or, all the 7th graders could play up one grade and we'd have a big and powerful team. (I think I like this option.)

Others may come also - I usually recommend a rating of 400, but I think our club is so strong that those in the 250-400 range can actually play well enough to have a chance to win a game. This tournament will be difficult, but that's how you get better.

Tournament info and Ratings

Tournament on Saturday at Metcalf Jr. High. I will be there with a large group from another school that I'll have to supervise, but I'll still have some time for you. Go to schoolchess.org to register on-line or pay at the door at before 8:30 Cost is $18 plus lunch. Ask for the $1 discount if siblings register. It's a grade level tournament. If we have three in one grade we could have a team - and remember people can play up a grade or two to make a team.

ADVICE OF THE DAY: If you find a good move, don't make it. Look for a better one!

Congratulations to the girls who are going up, to Magnus and Thomas McD. who are also both moving up rapidly.

Chess ratings

Here's the formula I used to calculate new ratings based on your Solitaire Chess score.
Old Rating/30+10 was your expected score for every 5 points you exceeded your expected score, you gained a point. For every 5 points you fell short, you lost a point. Biggest gains - Josh +6, Anton +5, Keighvin +3. Biggest losers - Tom McD and Misha who didn't turn in a sheet with their name or score, so I subtracted 3. I also subtracted a total of 30 points from various people who were talking or looking around the room when they should have been looking at the board.
